Review of Vara : A Blessing (2014) by Kesang K — 27 Apr 2014
3 stars for effort. I have watched this movie twice at the TriBeCa Film Festival. I really wanted to like it, but I suppose it fell very short of my high expectations. I liked this Director's 1st movie, The Cup, the best among his three movies.
The location was fabulous, as was Shahana Goswami's performance in this movie, limited as this movie seemed to be.
For some reason, I could not fathom why when the setting seemed to be in the south of India, yet, most of the references were from Northern India and from Bengal, rather than the South, which has a very distinct culture as well as cuisine and language. They have almost nothing in common with the North! Sigh!
The camera work in certain scenes, or quite often, came across as amateurish, it was rather confusing, as some scenes, the camera was neither focused on the hands, nor on the face, so it added some frustration to watching the scenes play out!
And sadly, I was bored, and 90 minutes just seemed too long.
