Review of Vanity Fair (2004) by Kayleigh T — 07 Nov 2007
Witherspoon plays the part well, but the script makes her the heroine in 'a story with no heroes', is too sympathetic to Becky Sharp, whitewashes her self-serving betrayal of others, and thus destroys Thackary's masterpiece.
Even so, the script is well-acted, the production offers wonderful eye-candy, and as itself independent of the classic literature, it's not a waste of time. It just tried to wobble on the fence and ended in saying nothing at all.
