Review of Vanishing Point (1971) by Joe L — 30 Aug 2009
Wow what a film! Filled with incredible actual car chases and Barry Newman as the mysterious driver Kowalski it's a total high octane adventure across western America. It is very well made and very well directed.
I loved the DJ who narrates and guides our hero on his quest. It is a funny film because it doesn't really need to justify why he is doing this and towards the shock ending it shows he didn't really ever need to.
It's a cool film that shows the transition of the 1960s to the 1970s and the few people who still kept the radical free actions alive. Most of what is great metaphor wise is never stated directly but shown throughout the entire film.
It's a very very clever film and a total cult classic that anybody not just the car lovers (that which I am not a big fan of) can still love. Very fast and realistic film that reminds me that older films do things new ones can't and it's the ultimate road trip that represents everything badass and rebellious of those years in American history.
