Review of Vanishing Point (1971) by Jy S — 07 Feb 2010
"The ultimate car chase movie" is one way that people describe Richard Sarafian's Vanishing Point. They may be on to something here. The plot is rather weak and this is a letdown. Yes, it is a little hard to complain when the entire 100 minutes is basically 1 car chase, but there just isn't enough meat to the story to keep the film highly interesting.
Nevertheless, the main character of Kowalski reminisces about the past, which creates flashback sequences to avoid having the car chase for every second of the film. There are also a handful of side, albeit strange, characters to liven up the picture.
The car chase scenes have excellent sound, real time speed, and some stunt work. This makes for an enjoyable ride. There isn't much to Barry Newman's acting, but luckily the supporting cast picks it up in this department.
Cleavon Little and Charlotte Rampling are the ones to look out for.Vanishing Point has got an entertaining concept along with some interesting supporting characters. Both of these are enough to make this a good watch.
