Review of Vanishing Point (1971) by Robert C — 07 Sep 2010
It's about the journey... not the destination. This is clearly the movie Easy Rider wishes it was and the definitive "road" movie of the early 70's! Drugs. Rebellion. Car Chases! Denim! -all delivered with supreme B-movie shine. The first half of the movie is by far one of the strongest in history... but unfortunately completely burns out by the end, and to some extent continues to get more monotonous as more things try to develop, Just try and ignore all the preachy jive-talkin' and the conventional "bad-boy" ending of its time, if you don't know what i'm getting at... keep in mind that one of the movies final quotes is "speed means freedom of the soul." Think about it... it's pretty deep... if you're a stoner.
It's a shame this movie didn't play to it's strengths and kept it's simplicity at heart, if it had... it would have been EPIC!
Barry Newman nails it with one of the most charismatic "none" performances!
Quick off the mark but pretty much continues to decelerate before slamming on the breaks completely! Still fun though....
