Review of Vanilla Sky (2001) by Dan O — 26 Feb 2011
Ambitious, flawed, but with an immense emotional resonance, Crowe's film is unlikely to be considered as original in the wake of Inception and the like, but gosh darn do you want to love it! Cruise's smarminess actually somehow morphs into something heartwarming here, and Cruz is nothing short of delightful, while Crowe's soundtrack, while filled with great tunes but at first obtrusively odd (I do love the Radiohead at the start though, and Good Vibrations was a daring but weirdly perfect choice for the climax), eventually finds an appropriate justification so I'll let that slide.
All considered... not a masterpiece, but a film that certainly packs a wallop and leaves the viewer thinking for some time.
