Review of Vanilla Sky (2001) by Thomas J — 23 Apr 2010
Like a Stanley Kubrick masterpiece, 'Vanilla Sky' was misunderstood when first released. If critics were expecting just another blockbuster that doesn't challenge any preconceived conventions of a drama/sci-fi, then surely they were disappointed.
But this film is a triumph of innovation, a film that seamlessly and rhythmically progresses to its next shot, building on a sophisticated narrative structure. No scene is left to waste, no shot too long or too short, a film that breaks the notion of confining to just one specific genre and, like a work of art, urges the audience to decipher, decode and deconstruct the subtle thematic points that the film is communicating.
History will prove that this is the very best work from Cameron Crowe, Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz and Cameron Diaz.
