Review of Van Helsing (2004) by Trystan D — 01 Nov 2011
Six years later and Sommers film still remains a thoroughly underrated joy. Though far from a masterpiece (his predictably cheesy dialogue delivered with great ham by Roxburgh, and with stifled delivery by Beckinsale, remain a sore case in point) the film is filled with plenty of innovative ideas and great set pieces, while Sommers riffs on the earlier Universal horrors (particularly in the opening black and white scene) remain as inspired as they are effective.
