Review of Vampire's Kiss (1989) by Damjan R — 01 Aug 2013
Misjudging your material can lead to trouble, and this is what happens in Vampire's Kiss. This really bizarre story has Nicolas Cage playing a literary agent who, after first being scared of a stray bat that flies into his apartment, then becomes aroused by the said bat and ultimately goes out with a woman and after this encounter he begins to think that he is becoming a vampire.
Don't worry if it sounds ridiculous, it is, but it never goes anywhere. What happens is, Cage runs amok with thoroughly over the top acting that is at odds with everyone else in the film. The film genre hops in a way that isn't consistent and gives the impression that the filmmakers didn't know what they wanted to achieve, is it a drama, or a comedy, or something else.
Notions of any serious storytelling go out the window with a plot that is so nonsensical and it gets really stale after awhile. What I will say is that some visual interest is sparked in the film, but the direction on the whole is a complete mess, so it's not a total disaster.
But it's pretty close.
