Review of Vampire Hunter D (1985) by Ni C — 30 Jul 2007
My favorite quote from this movie: "I need a man like you!" --Doris.
This is classic in all the good and bad ways. Animation isn't bad for its time, and if all you watch is DBZ it will certainly seem wonderful. The voice acting is fair for most of the characters, with the exception of D. I believe the actor who did his voice for VHD: Bloodlust was far superior. It also has a certain charm that comes with age, a charm that the villain, Count Magnus Lee, did not get with age, apparently.
Now for the bad. I'm not one of those people that is offended by boobies. I'm proud of my female figure, and I'm not mortified by my own biology. However, it's obvious with this movie what demographic they were aiming for. I'm just a little burned because all I got to see was wimmens with the scantily cladness and bare selves, AND ALL I GET TO SEE OF D IS HIS FREAKING FACE!!! It's just not fair, he's so purdy! *pout, pout, pout* Anyway, the themes (I use that term lightly) are about as subtle as a freight train, and Doris, oh poor Doris, is not exactly well written (well, no one is exactly fantastically written). When she comes on to D, you find that you'll be as "Oh come on woman! You can't be serious!" as D himself is. It could make a little more sense, but again, this wasn't written for females who look into a relationship too much. However, the scene does its job, and D has to resist poor Doris in more ways than one.
Lots of blood, gore, and some modest amount of breastage, but nothing truly sexual. Doris offers to sleep with D twice, for different reasons, and D is noble enough to refuse both times. All the guys keep their nickers on.
All I've seen of D is his face and his left hand -- it's not freaking fair!
