Review of Valkyrie (2008) by Oliver K — 27 Dec 2010
I certainly think the exploration of Nazi Germany is one of the most interesting that can be made in 20th Century history.
However, this film feels a little deflated.
Maybe, its because I knew the outcome all along. I don't think it was really the acting as this film was populated with a pretty decent supporting cast most of whom are superb British actors. I think it was more down to the fact it was treated rather woodenly.
I think they should've tried to personalise each of the contributors a little more, and just make it a little more transparent to the gravity of the situation but also what that meant to each of them. Instead it felt more of a play by play account of merely what happened, which is interesting in its own right, but not nearly as stimulating after probing the motives behind it all.
