Review of Valkyrie (2008) by Joshua C — 13 Dec 2011
If you're one of those people who can't get past the whole "the actors don't speak German in a Nazi movie" thing then you're missing out on quite the tense little thriller. In fact, the movie covers the whole language issue right from the get go with a Hunt For Red October-esque transition so it's really a moot point.
Far as I'm concerned, director, Brian Singer, redeems himself from his Superman Returns backlash and Tom Cruise is mostly forgiven for his 2005 media meltdown with Valkyrie, the story of Colonol Claus Von Stauffenberg's attempted coup against Hitler's Nazi regime.
A little slow paced at first the movie picks up in the second half as you watch Stauffenberg and co. put their elaborate takeover plan into action. I'm not really up to speed on the historical accuracy of every moment in the movie but while the outcome is naturally still inevitable, the buildup to the finale manages to remain suspensful and intense.
Check it out.
