Review of Valkyrie (2008) by Miguel R — 10 Jul 2015
A slightly missed opportunity to tell a story rarely seen on film. Once you get past the bizarre mixture of English and American accented Germans, Valkyrie is watchable. Casting Cruise was a mistake - he brought very little beyond a chiseled steely stare.
Yet Singer did not make the most of the rest of his high calibre cast. It was all plot and exposition and hardly a shred of character to build empathy and understanding for their plight. This created a distinct lack of tension, as we weren't fully emotionally engaged with the characters and yearning for them to avoid the inevitable.
Argo proved if you can get an audience to connect with the characters you can get them on the edge of their seats, in spite of the fact we know how the film is going to end. Less so here sadly. Valkyrie felt more like a big budget TV documentary dramatisation rather than an A-list Hollywood drama.
