Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by Laimis Z — 17 Dec 2011
There is poetry in here somewhere and Refn has some wonderful touches. It doesn't add up to anything brilliant but it has the potential and that makes it solid in my book. The first 30-40 minutes is jam packed with brutal violence.
It isn't stylized or sexy, it shows how dehumanizing and retched this period of time was. Now the last hour is basically Herzog doing the Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite scene, not really but that sounds more intriguing than it actually is.
Mads Mikkelsen is fantastic and needs more work, he can do anything!
