Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by Wes M — 26 Jan 2012

I'm prolly gonna have to review this movie twice. Either that, or leave the rating off this 1st time. Uhh, I didn't get it. I really wanted to, but it didn't happen. First off, it's rather slow-paced, and the main character never talks, so if that's not your thing, good luck enjoying this haha. It's a Nicolas Winding Refn movie, the guy that just made Drive, and I adored that movie. Now that I think about it, the style is extremely similar in both films: Refn likes to make ultra-violent art house with emotionless, minimal-dialogue characters. I like that idea, but that means the movies aren't narrative-driven. I don't like that idea. Without some sort of description or characters that express themselves, it becomes nearly impossible to tell the story. However, the scenary/landscapes are awesome; prolly cuz it was shot entirely in Scotland. I didn't hate it by any means, hell, if I understood it, I'd prolly love it. But yea, I felt like it was a very good movie that demands another viewing for full appreciation. Err...I'll rate it later.
