Review of Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970) by Ryan M — 22 Jan 2009
A fairy tale that keeps getting derailed when consciousness of adulthood's scarier moments triggers a new wrinkle in the fabric of Valerie's dream. Sex and death stalk childhood, leaving the inner spirit (embodied by Valerie's magic earrings) to fend for itself in the tough process of coming to terms with ideas and phenomena that during youth did not -- really absolutely could not exist.
The movie has an additional layer of interest as a product made under the shadow of the Soviets (honestly how this movie evaded the censors is a puzzle). Throw a bone to the Czech New-Wave and see this and 'Dasies' for an absolute trip.
