Review of Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970) by Eric R — 11 Jul 2010
I cannot help but be rather disappointed in this film. Valerie recieves a pair of earrings from a young man in the middle of the night. The next day she awakens to find that the entire town has been infected by some form of Vampirism.
Its essentially a surreal journey into a young woman's sexual awakenings. What follows is a gigantic convoluted puzzle of themes with elements such as sexuality, incest, virginity, and macabre. The film is full of interesting symbolism but its really just too much a convoluted mess for my liking.
The film does do a great job of creating this dreamlike atmosphere and there are clearly some nods to classic fairytales such as Alice in Wonderland and Nosferatu. Its a quite unique Gothic fairytale but in the end I just grew tired of its freeform style and felt like I wanted something with a little more substance.
Its definitely fascinated, but just too convoluted to be something special.
