Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Michel S — 04 Aug 2017
The opening Scene of Valerian is among the finest moments I've ever experienced in a theater, unfortunately and perhaps unavoidably, it's all down hill from there. The core problem is the lead.
Dane DeHaan spends the film doing an impression Keanu Reeves as performed by some one who can not stand Keanu Reeves. There is also zero chemistry between him and Cara Delevingne, they really do come off as two people that have the urge to punch one-another every time the director say cut.
Their dialog is also cringe worthy, but with better direction or actors it could have worked, maybe. All that said I still recommend it. Sure the mains being crap is not nothing, but if you can roll with Flash Gordon era banter coming out of teenagers (yes I know they're older then they look) then there is plenty worth seeing.
It's imaginative as hell, looks stunning, the sound design is incredible and the underlying story isn't haft bad.
