Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Brendan N — 02 Dec 2017
I was a little annoyed that this film didn't deliver. The trailer had a large scope that looked to deliver something missing from this modern era, original world building. Besson delivered The Fifth Element which is a hybrid of action and European creativity, sadly this film wasn't that unique.
The biggest issue I had with the film was the main characters who lacked any true arc. You can get away with not giving us everything but the two characters never develop over the course of the film. The film has a very powerful opening but after the destruction of an alien planet, we are left with an overbaked sci fi film.
I think this film may develop a following over time due to the world building at hand. The ambition of the project clouds what could have been an interesting film and this failed to ignite the box office.
