Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Ted L — 02 Jun 2018
Before writing this, I spent an hour or so looking back at Besson's early reviews of flicks like The Fifth Element. There's a thread here, and ultimately Valerian could find success later in life.
The thing is that the scale used by critics to merit films is simply redundant when it comes to the film making pallete used by Besson. I cant help she the feeling that the production was at odds with itself though, and many aspects of the narrative dumbed down, which I think if avoided, would have knocked the initial box office figures even more.
This film could have been a second or third read though, and a director's cut would do that. The Fifth Element was only a 3 star film by all initial accounts. Its now a 5 star classic of sorts. I think the same holds true of Valerian and the city of a thousand planets, but it needs a Besson cut to do it.
