Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Eludiumq36 — 25 Nov 2017
Look, whatever you think of "Valerian..." you have to admit it's a VFX fest. Seriously, it needs to win awards for this level of effort. As for the film itself, I like Luc Besson and you'll see a lot of his famous "The Fifth Element" in this, and it also looks like he borrowed the Na'vi from Cameron's "Avatar".
He got so many parts of this film right but the leads are serious impediments. Dane and Cara just don't have the gravitas to lead this. Dane, at age 30, comes off as juvenile and in need of good spanking and Cara at least attempts to bring some level of maturity but falls short.
Also, Dane sounds a lot like Keanu Reeves in portions of this and that doesn't benefit him. I don't know how much Luc was involved in their casting but it's a big fail and may be the big reason this film didn't score better.
Also, the haphazard way they tied up the end of the film by wasting a lot of time with a pointless blaster fight hurt it. The film just wasn't fully baked.
