Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by John W — 13 Nov 2017
Valerian, a spatio temporal agent in a story with no time travel whatsoever...
This movie feels like following two characters who are not linked to the main story-line until the end. Imagine The Empire Strikes Back, except you follow Lando Calrissian in Cloud City.
The characters lack believable motivation for all the action scenes. It feels like throwing the thousand visual ideas Luc Besson had for a universe into this movie with no believable character development or a story-line. He managed to pull together a good universe compromise between Star Wars, even the prequels, and his The Fifth Element. This universe is interesting, there are good ideas, and if all you want to see is a space universe, you'll enjoy it. But don't expect that this universe will make sense and push a compelling story.
