Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Max142 — 03 Aug 2017
A fantastic film! After seeing the trailers I had high expectations for this film and it completely cleared them to give me the best film I have seen in ages.
You get a really sense from start to finish a lot of effort and love has gone into getting this right, the quality shines through.
The epic scale of the future and worlds have wonderful detail but never to much, just the right amount to make flow and feel immersive at the same time.
You see the world as the characters explore it so you definitely feel taken along for the same ride and this gives it a wonderful experience of exploring it with them.
The story is brilliant and the characters enraging, interesting and likeable. The story and characters strike a perfect blend of the serious with the funny, some of the best scenes are with Cara Delevingne as Sgt Laureline who gives a standout performance of a character who pulls no punches either in a fight or in a conversation.
The visuals are absolutely breath taking and a must see at the cinema with incredible effects and aliens who look very cool and life like.
The film is 2 hours 17 minutes but it really does not feel that long keeping a great pace told through the two main characters who work well together and apart. The two main characters are down to earth in an epic world and they really give the story a great flow and feel.
Wonderful film, I highly recommend it for anyone who loves a great adventure film with imaginative story, world and fun, likeable characters.
