Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Jef M — 02 Aug 2017
The opening sequence is really something special. The rest of the movie is fun, but flawed.
The script is hampered by cringe-worthy dialog, particularly for Valerian, which Dane DeHaan is not charismatic enough to sell. Laureline is, unfortunately, just a foil. Without giving away the plot, the movie relies on tired tropes, and it is not very clever.
That said, the visuals are stunning and there are plenty of fun moments. I do hope that the movie does well enough for a sequel, and Luc Besson directs but doesn't write it. The cinematic universe is vibrant and worth exploring.
