Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Kai B — 28 Jul 2017
The film feels like it was the product of a child's imagination, with all the same pitfalls. Any hinderances the eponymous hero encountered throughout the film were quickly resolved in a fashion I would liken to that one kid at recess; the one who, when you would play tag or something, would make up rules on the spot so as to excuse themselves from being 'it'.
I found Rihanna's character to be unnecessary to the plot, and considering her screen time, I don't understand why they would bring her on board. The film's villain was also horribly characterized, and barely did anything in the film, having only been revealed nearing the end of the film in a ham-fisted explanation.
The visual style hearkens back to director Luc Besson's earlier film The Fifth Element. It looks good, but it feels like more of the same, and is not enough to recommend the film to anybody not already interested.
