Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Kamron D — 20 Jul 2017
First third of the film was mostly inspired and very creative. The two leads were insipid, had no chemistry, made you wonder how they could possibly have convinced anyone they were capable of being "agents," and lacked any realistic motivations for anything.
That said, I still enjoyed the first third of the film for everything other than the lead characters. However, once the story moved into the main plot line, everything degenerated. The writing progressively inched toward "made for 12 y/o released directly to DVD" quality.
The lead actors' acting became more wooden and flat. The plot devices and solutions were immature. I went into this movie with low expectations for hearing some disappointing reviews prior. However, that didn't protect me against how badly written, acted, edited it actually was.
((Sigh)) I really, really want Neil Gaiman's stories to come to the screen. But, if Graphic Novels are butchered like this movie, we won't get to see many more.
