Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Steve B — 19 Nov 2017
I'm watching Valerian a second time and really want to enjoy the movie, but I think the biggest factor working against its success is the most subtle: it's soundtrack. It's not only cheesy, but it lacks continuity from scene to scene. The soundtrack destroys most of the movie for me, in spite of its other failures.
I think the casting was fine for the visual appeal of the actors, but I just don't feel any synergy between them. They played their roles and did their jobs as they were directed to do, but there's no synergy, no chemistry between them, at least that I felt.
There were other problems, too, such as voiceovers. The Bubble voiceover was a terrible match. The actress who performed the voice for Bubble has a beautiful voice, but it just wasn't a good match for the character.
