Review of Valentine (2001) by Brandon B — 03 Nov 2008
The first time I saw this post-Scream slasher film, I was able to piece out who the killer was in the first ten minutes. Of course, that is before I started watching Angel and realized that David Boreanez is supposed to usually be the good guy, but it still shows the by-the-numbers approach to this film.
Slasher films were good in their heyday, the late 70s through mid 80s, but since Scream ruined the subgenre by introducing hip WB actors, high production values, slick cinematography, and bloodless death scenes, most slasher films have been pedestrian at best.
The only thing that makes this film rise above the usual dreck and be watchable is the performances by Boreanez and Katherine Heigl, coupled with a sluttly performance by Denise Richards.
