Review of Valentine (2001) by Mmdeire — 27 Oct 2020
Valentine is 100x better than the critics give it credit for. It is stylish, expensive looking and the special effects still hold up very well today (with just one notable exception towards the end).
The stellar cast work through a script that is witty and sharp, the music is suspenseful and old school in a really great way, I’ll never get sick of that high pitch that keeps on rising. I always show this to friends who haven’t seen it after a few drinks and it’s always thoroughly enjoyed. I’ll never forget the first time I watched this at 11 years of age (my heart was pounding and it scared me half to death). The mask is extremely effective and creepy. If you don’t know who the killer is, go into this blind and see if you can work it out!
Well done to director Jamie Blanks for a somewhat forgotten slasher. As a lifelong horror fan I consider this a classic that has not faded with time.
