Review of Vacation (2015) by Emiy K — 28 Nov 2015
There are some genuine moments of comedy to be found here but they're buried under hacky bits for pure shock value. Vacation acts more as a reminder of how blockbusters have changed since the Griswolds originally entered our lives.
A formulaic plot isn't enough to satisfy audiences anymore and these characters aren't interesting enough to make up for it. The bland main characters make for a stark contrast against the background players (including a suicidal Charlie Day and a four way Mexican showdown involving Tim Heidecker, Kaitlin Olson, Nick Kroll, and Michael Pena) who all seem vastly more watchable.
Where the original is iconic, this movie is worse than bad, its unmemorable. Not all classics can be translated for modern times.
