Review of Vacancy (1999) by David Y — 24 Mar 2013
Why did the guy who edited the Vacancy trailer feel he had to give so much of the movie away? It's a shame, because for the most part the film is quite a tense and creepy thriller, and would've been more so had viewers not seen so much of it before they actually bought their ticket or rented the DVD.
Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale aren't the greatest actors, but they do good enough jobs here. Their marital bickering in the earlier scenes is pretty funny if only for being so familiar. The film also includes an amusingly creepy performance by Frank Whaley as the Hotel Manager and some pretty cool opening credits reminiscent of those in Hitchcock movies.
Unfortunately, much like most of the other films in its genre, Vacancy has some of those annoying moments when characters do blatantly stupid things. It also has a frustratingly abrupt ending. Still, the film keeps an effectively grim and ominous mood of suspense throughout a lot of its running time, which will make it worth a rental for most people looking for an entertaining thriller.
