Don't give up on mediocre first entries of envisioned franchises because you never know; you might get something as terrific as this. this is such an insane quantum leap above the original v/h/s it would be a mistake to lower your expectations by watching the prequel.
it's shorter and much more consistent and the entries themselves are greatly improved in terms of inventiveness and scare factor and finds its way to push the boundaries of the stagnant medium in interesting ways.
safe haven is by far the best one, though.
