Review of V for Vendetta (2006) by Adrian Z — 29 Apr 2013

One of the most unusual superhero films, based on Alan Moore's graphic novel. Weaving stays behind a Guy Fawke's mask throughout the film, but his performance still shines through the inflection of his voice, his posture, and mannerisms.

Historically there are lots of styles of live theatre that have actors portray their characters through masks, and this would be a shining extension of that tradition. Natalie Portman on the other hand, does not impress either badly or in a good way.

Director James McTeigue gives the film a slick visual treatment and a deliciously satirical tone, which although not always consistent, is certainly pleasurable within the context of a superhero film.
