Review of Us (2019) by Warlok9 — 23 Mar 2019
It was suspenseful, especially the middle act. The big twist ending is easily predicted within the first 30 minutes. It’s a shame that Peele went for the suspense/twist ending again in his second run. It doesn’t work here.
Would have been a better and more suspenseful story if they just revealed the truth near the beginning of the movie instead of thinking no one will guess it right. I suppose there are countless areas of symbolism in the film, but the backstory of the antagonists is handled very ham-fistedly and leaves you shaking your head. I’ve seen worse explanations in other films, but this is pretty vague and requires major suspension of disbelief buy in. I think the movie would have been better served with a supernatural explanation vs what they actually went for.
I hope Peele doesn’t go the way of Shamaylan, continually trying to capture that same shocking twist ending in all of his movies. Just make a good suspenseful thriller, but perhaps let the audience in on the secret early in the film but hide it from the actors. Take a different angle.
I’m sure Peele will go a different direction in his next film. I suspect this movie will do well opening weekend but drop off in ticket sales second week.
