Review of Upgrade (2018) by Alex M — 31 May 2018
Upgrade is the single most surprising movie of 2018 so far. Funny, frightening, thrilling, and oh so visceral, this is a movie I'll definitely be purchasing down the line. The movie is also unexpectedly deep with its science-fiction themes, even though the central revenge plot is familiar. For pure entertainment value, the film wholeheartedly succeeds and deserves a 5/5. More critical viewers will note the occasionally distracting acting (particularly by the villains), some very convenient plot points scattered throughout the film, and the film's somewhat predictable nature.
Logan Marshall Green isn't a great actor, but does well in this starring role. His comedic timing is consistently spot-on, as is Simon Maiden's as STEM. The action scenes are also brilliantly filmed and choreographed.
When I have friends over for a movie night, I often show The Raid: Redemption as my go-to action film. Upgrade will likely take its place. Pure entertainment.
