Review of Up the Yangtze (2007) by Andy T — 01 Dec 2008
Yung Chang's admirable almost-documentary captures a China in transition. He mines the same globalization-centric territory as the Sixth-Generation directors, but less obliquely. Whether this is a positive is up to you.
His aesthetic is contemplative and observational, but it lacks the subtlety and immediacy of the top tier films on the subject. On the other hand, the film's retained running time and carefully composed images offer a reprise from the excessive length and intentionally slip-shod neorealist style of his mainland contemporaries.
For this reason this may serve as an excellent entry point for viewers who are curious about moving away from Wu Xia.
