Review of Up in the Air (2009) by Andrew S — 19 Jan 2012
Reitman shows he is above Juno in this one. A more melodramatic role for Clooney as a corporate hatchet man,but I really felt it was newcomer Anna Kendrick (who would be nominated for best supporting actress along with her co-star Vera Farminga) dominated her scenes.
Up in the air like its title is about two things: growing up and identity. Both are susceptible to change and Clooney's character Ryan unlike everyone around him up until this point has been kept at a permanent status quo.
He is content with this until he meets the woman of his dreams. This thin summary is of course lacking in the distinctive setting that makes it all the more important. The economic crisis that began in 2008 that led to massive unemployment, downsizing and the like.
Ryan is a product of his environment and tries to defend his lifestyle for as long as possible, but somethings might not end as they should. Good effort by cast and crew, I liked it.
