Review of Up (2009) by Bobn. — 02 Jun 2009
I wasn't going to see this film. The animation did not grab my interest -it seemed too similar to the Incredibles. Yet, come on now, it is a Pixar film, I reasoned. With low expectations I saw it.
I think Roger Ebert said it best by comparing this with Miyazaki's beautiful animations. Though Miyazaki is on a whole different level of fantasy, this film felt like one of his films-which is a great thing.
I hold WALL-E to be Pixar's best film, and the best thing Disney has ever done. I will not compare it to Up. Up does not have a solid story, nor does anything truly grab you...but it has a spirit to it.
That spirit, or atmosphere, it beautiful. This is a pure fantasy film with some heart. Nothing deep, but everything enjoyable. Parts are sad, but not overbearingly. Other Pixar films are sadder. I loved this film.
It is not a cemented together as the others, but, again, that spirit...go see it and enjoy.
