Review of Unsane (2018) by Ron H — 23 Aug 2018
I didn't watch this in the theater, I saw it on Amazon Prime video for free. That said, it was worth the price. I was interested in it because I'd heard it was shot entirely on an iPhone. I wanted to see if that was just a gimmick or if the movie was actually any good.
At first I kept analyzing the technical aspects of the film. "Hmm, the is obviously shot on a phone..." That sort of thing. But about 17 minutes in I became more enraptured with the story and paid less attention to what was used to shoot it.
As for the story itself I can say that I can totally believe a lot of that stuff actually happening. With the exception of the co-ed mental asylum. I've been in a couple (for professional reasons) and while they do generally mingle at day, I've never seen one with co-ed open bay sleeping arrangements.
Apart from that, I call it a solid movie. Soderbergh says he loved using the phone to shoot and the actors said they felt more comfortable in front of it rather than a big camera, but for me and I presume most viewers, what was used to shoot is of little concern. It's the story that matters. And the story was good.
