Review of Unfriended: Dark Web (2018) by Devaughn B — 20 Jul 2018

Dedicating this written review to the recently passed Jon Schnepp, living on forever in the hearts of all sweaties. Rest in peace, my man. I really enjoyed this stand-alone sequel! I think it does something better with the story and technology being used to move the story along, than the original did. The cast is much better here than the original's; everything felt real to me this time around, as opposed to the many silly moments and unnecessary situations in the original film's script that weigh it down.

This sequel is such an unnerving, dark horror film that delivers on much better scares and genuine nail-biting moments. The last time I was this unsettled in an auditorium full of people during dead silent, tension-building scenes wasn't even with Hereditary, but A Quiet Place. I had also heard that Unfriended: Dark Web would be hitting theaters with two (randomized) different endings, to encourage repeat viewings. Reading up on what the second ending is, I can safely say I lucked out, catching the primary - and the only acceptable - ending. Provided I have time, I would definitely see this film again, but the remainder of the summer is still looking fairly crowded, so I'm not sure if it's in the cards right now.
