Review of Unfriended: Dark Web (2018) by Chris O — 26 Jul 2018
An intense, thrilling horror that follows up well to its predecessor.
When a 20-something finds a cache of hidden files on his new laptop, he and his friends are unwittingly thrust into the depths of the dark web. They soon discover someone has been watching their every move and will go to unimaginable lengths to protect the dark web.
Alright, so I was actually a pretty big fan of the first film. It was intense, thrilling and creepy in all the right ways. When I heard there was a sequel coming out, my mind went instantly to cash grab. I didn't have much faith in the sequel and honestly, the trailers weren't too compelling. To my surprise, I actually had some fun with this film and although largely imperfect, it's actually got some good kick to it.
Nothing's ever as good as the first time. While the first film focused on a more personal situation and a supernatural element, this one decided to take a different route. This film explored the dark web and I found that to be really interesting. It honestly felt pretty real in some parts and that's what's scariest about it. I think the fact that in some way, on some level, this stuff is actually real, that's what got to me. I think the dark web is a disturbing thing and that's what this movie did well. It took that idea and explored it well.
Honestly, I didn't like the acting as much as I did in the first one. Without even comparing, I thought the acting wasn't as strong. Yes, it was suitable and it worked for the most part, but I felt it could've been stronger at times. I felt there were times where it could've been more convincing or more compelling. It was a film with a lot going on and I appreciate a lot that it did, but it could've done a bit more. On top of the plot holes, unbelievable aspects, and mistakes, the acting at times could've carried it.
In the end, "Unfriended: Dark Web" was actually a pretty good film. It's a good horror film and one of the better surprises of the year. If you're a horror or thriller buff, this isn't a bad film to take to in the theaters.
