Review of Unfriended (2014) by David L — 14 Jul 2017
Whilst searching for an easy going horror that I could watch whilst ironing, I made a bit of a blunder opting for this as the majority of the films dialogue is written via online messages, as opposed to spoken verse.
Luckily I didn't burn any of my shirts, but that might be in part due to the fact that this was a bit of an uncaptivating watch. Given its supernatural theming, it was never going to get my vote, but as much as it built up nicely, the key moments were totally misunderstood by me.
I just couldn't comprehend how it all made sense. Essentially, several friends were being taunted because of their involvement with a school friends suicide, and we were supposed to think she was out for revenge - Obvious question, but how could a dead person, who's suicide video was uploaded on YouTube, be responsible for killing everyone? That's not supernatural, that's just factually impossible.
Despite this, the whole online concept did give it a very modern perspective, and also made me concentrate to a certain extent. However, despite being partially gripped by it, the fundamental floors and difficulty I had seeing what was happening at times, hampered my enjoyment.
The interaction between the characters was good, despite me being slow at learning who was who and putting names to faces, and I can easily see this being a hit with teenagers today. Thumbs up for the attempt at making this a very current take on the genre, and picking up on the trends of modern day, but a tad more work needed on the realism me thinks.
