Review of Unforgiven (1992) by Dmitrijus B — 07 Apr 2012
Good: Unforgiven is a great, character-driven film. There is no convenient black-white perspective, hardly any usual genre cliches let alone all the main guys in the film leave an impression of pretty complex, profoundly written people with vivid personalities and believable motivations. Speaking of which, I loved how creators managed to marry the Western genre with the existential absurdity. Also, the lighting looked really bad and unprofessional at the beginning but once you have discerned it as a deliberate choice to highlight the visual style, the murky play of shadows seems quite good and consistent with the theme of moral obscurity.
Bad: It's still no True Grit (2010). But again, you can't have it all every time. And I know my admiration for the Coen's work is seldom given countenance.
