Review of Unforgiven (1992) by Steve H — 29 Oct 2018
AFI 100 Greatest Films - #98: Although my experience with the Western genre is limited to average, I would say this was one of the better ones I have seen and definitely more interesting than some that AFI ranked higher on their list.
Many older westerns are simplistic in their good vs bad plot lines and heavy handed in the manner in which they moralistically view issues in black and white. Unforgiven took a much more nuanced approach which I greatly appreciated and, with the exceptional acting, many characters were not simply, good or bad, and were worth exploring on multiple levels.
Could see myself even getting to a 4.5* on subsequent viewings as I would go 8.5 out of 10 right now.
