Review of Unfinished Business (2015) by Robert G — 14 Jun 2015
The worst part of Unfinished Business isnâ(TM)t that itâ(TM)s not funny (it isnâ(TM)t) - itâ(TM)s that it doesnâ(TM)t even seem to want to be funny. Much of the film is narrated by Vince Vaughnâ(TM)s protagonist mentally writing his daughter a letter about how worried he is about his sonâ(TM)s mental health, and her own mounting pubescent angst; hilarious stuff(?).
And the other characters, mostly played for laughs, also just come off as kind of sad. Dave Francoâ(TM)s Mike Pancake (a character whose name is a running joke with literally nothing more to it than â~the word Pancake is a funny nameâ(TM)) comes off sweet, but genuinely mentally challenged; the old man character just comes off as world-beaten and trying to reclaim a sense of the competitive business world that left him behind.
Thereâ(TM)s some inherent charm that the frankly incredible cast wrings out of the weak script, but all in all this just really feels like a dull, misguided, raunchy dreamed than a stupid, raunchy comedy the trailer played it off as.
