Review of Unfaithful (2002) by Virdas R — 26 Apr 2009
Whatever creeping mystery or suspense Chabrol had probably put into his original version translated really well into Lyne's erotic remake. Aside from the obvious sexuality, Lyne also put in a great element of trash into the movie here and there which made the movie fun to watch. It's so entertaining to watch a movie so self-aware of its own melodrama: watch the bathroom booth scene.
To say that "nothing happens" in the beginning is strange because a film like this one, especially if its source is Chabrol, has to build up and stew. This movie stews with eroticism and end its tango with inevitable movie violence. This is probably the only movie I have ever seen where I've rooted, so to speak, for Richard Gere and I have never seen Diane Lane in this kind of light.
She's hot.
And Dewie from Malcom in the Middle is a horrendous child actor. My god.
