Review of UnFair: Exposing the IRS (2014) by Norman B — 14 Oct 2014
No Oscars for acting ... but should win an Oscar for documentaries! The movie sets out to go beyond the financial implications (the complexity and costs) of the income tax to highlight that the income tax at its core is immoral.
This is a very tall order, indeed! There is a ton of information packed into a very tight 1.5 hour movie. It comes at you fast. You want to get some caffeine in your system before sitting down to watch it.
In the end, I am of the opinion that the producers succeeded in their goal! They clearly demonstrate that the income tax and the IRS has been used and will forever continue to be used as a weapon by both political parties (though the documentary covers largely the recent targeting which happens to be the Democrats targeting conservatives.
) The case is clearly made that preachers, churches, civic organizations and others find themselves making an Orwellian choice -- do they speak their minds and risk losing their tax exempt status (and the likely demise of their organizations) or stay quiet and try to do as much good as they can under the watchful eye of Big Brother! This is simply immoral and strikes at the founding principles of our country -- freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of association, freedom again self-incrimination, property rights, trials by jury, etc.
The producers clearly show that the income tax and the IRS stomp on all of these rights enshrined in the Bill of Rights! Well done and definitely worth the time to watch if you get the chance!
