Review of Underworld: Blood Wars (2016) by Neo A — 14 Jan 2017
Will this franchise ever end? Probably not, which I'm actually ok with.
UNDERWORLD: Blood Wars.
So, first things first. If you're looking for deep storytelling, pick a different movie; if you want a spaghetti western with classic horror monsters, this film might work for you.
The main element of the plot is 90% fight sequences, 10% vital plot points, but honestly, I didn't mind, as the fights were pretty impressive, but none were just repeats of the same fight; they were all a little different in some way. As for the actual plot bits, it sort of ties up a couple loose ends, adds further depth to characters we've already met, introduces us to new characters who seem one-dimensional, but grow deeper as we watch them, for good or ill, and finally, it shamelessly sequel begs, but it's for a sequel I kinda wanna see now. There were a few flashbacks, but mainly for much needed details, so they weren't too annoying.
The effects are almost perfect, I say "almost" because of one effect that really could've used some more work, but other than that, it was really good! The CGI for the werewolves was great, it blended seamlessly with the practical effects, they used real sets & places whenever they could, & the CGI landscapes were beautiful. The color scheme was pretty limited, but what they managed to achieve with it visually is a testament to the folks who make these films (slow clap).
The characters we've seen so far have stayed true to form, I think, with any growth being a bit too subtle for the untrained eye, but that doesn't take away from them as a whole. The villains ranged from tragically uninspired, to comically cliché, but were consistently entertaining in some way. The various side characters all had a story to tell, but each would require their own movie.
3 stars out of 5, if you watch it expecting deep symbolism & thoughtful dialog, you're gonna hate it; if you watch it expecting vampires & werewolves to beat the heck out o each other, you'll enjoy it. Let's hope we get at least one more movie, to end the blood wars once & for all!
