Review of Underworld: Blood Wars (2016) by Bel G — 26 Feb 2017
The newest addition to the series is nothing more then a retread of already tackled stories but with small tweaks. I believe be this series has officially run out of ideas for its stories. The plot is paper thin. The characters are under developed and the action is mind numbing. This is probably the second best Under World film which is saying nothing as they all suck for various reasons. The film has a pretty great cast but besides Kate being the main protagonists most they get really nothing to do. We get some.
Decent to solid performances from the cast in an unfortunate terrible film. The villain(s) are also a paper thin, copy and paste cliched power hungry baddies that many films use. The film also gives another huge middle finger to long time fans by killing Micheal Corvin (who I never really cared about to begin with) off screen and showing it to us through some bullshit vision. So much for the importance of his character in this franchise. The special effects for the Lycans is also horrendous. It's by far the worst it's ever been. This makes the special effects of the previous movie look good by comparison. The Lycans designs are still ugly and terrible bear, lion hybrid looking and whoever came up with the design for the main villains Lycan transformation needs to be fired for a piss poor design. Basically a werewolf but with a human face. It's just completely ugly and made up of terrible CGI. The Vampires are under developed. The film introduces a new ability but then basically goes back on it. The ability could basically end the movie in 3 seconds once gaining it but because the main hero read the script in advance she saw that she wasn't allowed to automatically kill every Lycan and win. I did like one of the settings of the film that took place in "the north" where it was covered in snow which had a visually cool design to it and looks like a really cool setting for a vampire and werewolf movie. Overall tho this is basically more of the same that we've all come to expect from these films. Overall 1/5.
