Suitably dark and violent yet disappointingly short on vampire action, Underworld benefits from a slick and sexy performance by Kate Beckinsale who stars as Selene, a vampire caught in between the war of Vampires and Werewolves, she is a death dealer who discovers and falls in love with a half human/half Lycan called Michael who wants the war to end.

The story is rather convoluted, there's so many strands of different characters motives and way too many flashbacks, which Len Wiseman does like to delve into, although his gothic style and superb lighting set the mood perfectly for the whole movie, and he stages the action very well from shootouts to stealthy moments.

I am a huge fan of Kate Beckinsale, she's my celebrity crush, she is the main reason I got round to watching these movies. I've actually watched these in the order of four, two and now one, and have yet to see three but I think this franchise offers horror fans and vampire fans enough blood and gore and themes of forbidden passion to entertain and keep them enthralled and ready for further instalments.
